Key Changes in IS 800 – 2025 (Draft)
IS 800 – 2025 draft version aims to improve the old IS 800 code that is offering following core changes.
Working Stress Method Removed
- The Working Stress Design (WSD) method is fully discontinued.
- Only Limit State Design (LSD) is retained.
Updated Material Properties
- Tensile property tables revised to align with IS 2062.
- New steel categories added:
- Fire-resistant steel (IS 15103:2002)
- Weather-resistant steel (IS 11587:1986)
- Seismic-resistant steel (IS 15962:2012)
Revised Temperature Stress Provisions
- Updated rules for temperature-induced stresses in steel structures.
Fire Load & Fire Design Updates
- Fire design requirements revised to reflect modern fire engineering practices.
Revised Width-to-Thickness Ratios
- Table 2 (limiting slenderness ratios) updated for modern steel sections.
Second-Order Effects
- Improved guidelines for P–Δ and P–δ effects in structural analysis.
Updated Seismic Design Provisions
- Earthquake load combinations and detailings, aligned with current seismic philosophy.
