California Plumbing Contractor License: Exams, Fees & Renewal

To legally perform plumbing work in California, contractors must hold a statewide C-36 California Plumbing Contractor License issued by the Contractors State License Board (CSLB). Applicants need at least four years of journeyman-level experience, must pass two exams, and provide a $25,000 surety bond.

  • Bond: $25,000 surety bond required.

  • C-36 Plumbing Trade Exam: 100 questions, 3.5 hours, pass score 72%.
  • Covers California Plumbing Code, safety, estimating, and installation practices.

  • Initial License Fee: $200
  • Fingerprinting: $49

  • Renewal: $450 every 2 years (no continuing education required)

Renewal Cycle of C-36 Plumbing Contractor License

  • Active licenses: Expire every 2 years.
  • Inactive licenses: Expire every 4 years.
  • Renewal notices are mailed 60 days before expiration. If not received within 45 days, you can request one online or by calling 800-321-CSLB.

Risks of Missing Renewal of Plumbing License
